Plasticity and Epigenetic variation in Phragmites australis, an invasive marsh grass

چکیده
A recent field known as epigenetics has shown that the environment can impact gene expression through chemical modifications, such as methylation, of genes. This provides a mechanism for acclimation to be inherited across mitotic and meiotic generations, thus more stable than physiological acclimation, and permits more reversible adaptation at time scales shorter than natural selection. We examine the impact of epigenetics in the phenotypic plasticity of invasive and native strains of Phragmites australis.

Maximal stomatal conductance to water and plasticity in stomatal traits differ between native and invasive introduced lineages of Phragmites australis in North America.
The fitness costs of reproduction by clonal growth can include a limited ability to adapt to environmental and temporal heterogeneity. Paradoxically, some facultatively clonal species are not only able to survive, but colonize, thrive and expand in heterogeneous environments. This is likely due to the capacity for acclimation (sensu stricto) that compensates for the fitness costs and complement...
متن کاملDensity-dependent role of an invasive marsh grass, Phragmites australis, on ecosystem service provision
Invasive species can positively, neutrally, or negatively affect the provision of ecosystem services. The direction and magnitude of this effect can be a function of the invaders' density and the service(s) of interest. We assessed the density-dependent effect of an invasive marsh grass, Phragmites australis, on three ecosystem services (plant diversity and community structure, shoreline stabil...
متن کاملMechanisms of exclusion of native coastal marsh plants by an invasive grass
1 Determining the mechanisms by which invasive species exclude natives is critical for conserving and restoring native populations in impacted habitats. In recent decades the grass Phragmites australis has been aggressively invading coastal marshes of North America, with monocultures often replacing diverse assemblages of plants. 2 Our objective was to quantify how P. australis modifies the abi...

متن کاملSpread of invasive Phragmites australis in estuaries with differing degrees of development: genetic patterns, Allee effects and interpretation
1. The distribution of genetic variation can be interpreted to understand the timing and mechanisms of invasive species spread. Allee effects, positive relationships between fitness and density or number of conspecific individuals, can play a substantial role in determining the time lag between initial introduction and invasive spread and can produce genetic patterns in invading populations tha...
